When the Power Goes Out in Alberta, How Long Can You Wait?

Alberta’s electrical grid is reliable, but summer storms, ice storms, and equipment failures can knock out power for hours or even days. A generator gives you options. But the generator itself is only part of the equation. How it connects to your home matters just as much as whether you have one at all.

Portable vs. Standby Generators: What’s the Real Difference?

Both types of generators can keep your home running during an outage. The differences come down to convenience, protection level, and upfront investment.

Portable generators are the kind you store in a garage or shed and pull out when the power goes down. They run on gasoline and need to be started manually. They’re a reasonable option for short outages when you only need to power a few essentials. The downsides: they require fuel storage, they’re loud, they must be run outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide buildup, and without a proper transfer switch, using one safely is a real challenge.

Standby generators are permanently installed outside your home, connected to a natural gas or propane line, and wired directly into your electrical system through an automatic transfer switch. When the power goes out, a standby generator detects the outage and starts automatically, often within seconds. You don’t have to do anything. When utility power is restored, it shuts itself off.

For homeowners with medical equipment, sump pumps in active use, livestock on a rural property, or anyone who simply wants reliable protection without scrambling during a storm, a standby generator is the more practical long-term solution.

Why a Transfer Switch Isn’t Optional

This is where many homeowners run into trouble. A portable generator sitting in the garage is one thing. Figuring out how to connect it safely is another.

The most important thing to understand: you can’t simply plug a generator into a wall outlet or connect it directly to your panel without a transfer switch. Doing so creates what’s called backfeeding, where power travels back through the meter and into the utility lines. Utility workers repairing outages can be seriously injured or killed by backfed electricity they have no way of knowing is live. This is the reason that connecting a generator without a transfer switch is illegal under the Canadian Electrical Code.

A transfer switch isolates your home from the grid before your generator comes online. It’s the component that makes backup power both legal and safe.

There are two main types:

  • Manual transfer switches require you to flip the switch when the power goes out and your generator is running. They’re a straightforward, lower-cost option for portable generator owners.
  • Automatic transfer switches (ATS) detect the outage and switch your home to generator power without any action on your part. These are standard with standby generator installations.

One of our customers called us after sitting in the dark for 12 hours with a generator in the garage. They had the equipment, but no safe way to connect it. We installed a transfer switch the following week. The next outage, they barely noticed.

Which Circuits Should You Prioritise?

Unless you’re installing a large standby generator designed to power your entire home, you’ll need to decide which circuits matter most. A licensed electrician can help you size your generator and configure the transfer switch to serve those circuits specifically.

Here’s how most homeowners in the Edmonton area think through it:

  • Furnace or boiler: In Alberta, especially during spring and fall storms when temperatures can drop overnight, losing heat is a genuine concern. The furnace is usually the top priority.
  • Sump pump: If your basement has a sump pump, it needs to run during and after heavy rain, which is exactly when outages tend to happen. A flooded basement is expensive.
  • Refrigerator and freezer: Food safety and the cost of replacing a full chest freezer are both good reasons to keep these on backup power.
  • Medical equipment: For anyone in the home relying on CPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, or other powered medical devices, backup power is not optional; it’s essential.
  • Lighting and communication: At minimum, keeping some lighting and the ability to charge phones makes a stressful situation more manageable.

On acreages and farms, the list often extends to livestock water heaters, heat trace systems, barn lighting, and well pumps. Rural properties outside Edmonton and Leduc can sometimes experience longer outage windows than urban areas, which makes backup power planning even more important.

What a Proper Generator Installation Includes

Whether you’re having a standby generator installed or setting up a transfer switch for a portable unit, a proper installation by a licensed electrician in Alberta includes more than just connecting wires.

Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Site assessment and load calculation: We look at what circuits you want to power and confirm the generator is appropriately sized for that load.
  • Transfer switch installation: Installed at the panel, fully isolated from the grid, and tested before the job is complete.

For standby generators, there’s additional coordination involved: placement of the unit outside the home (clearances from windows, doors, and the gas meter matter), connection to the natural gas or propane supply, and configuration of the automatic transfer switch.

Common area lighting and basic power can also matter for safety and security, especially in buildings where tenants rely on shared electrical infrastructure.

For commercial properties, the calculation shifts further toward the cost of downtime. A manufacturing or processing facility, a medical office, or a food service operation has financial exposure with every hour of power loss that goes well beyond inconvenience. Planning for backup power before an outage happens is almost always less expensive than the alternative.
