Your Garage Is Only as Useful as the Power Running Through It
Every spring, across Edmonton, Leduc, and the surrounding area, homeowners and tradespeople start making plans. Decks get built, basements get finished, and garages, the ones that spent all winter as cold storage, suddenly become workshops, home gyms, and proper working spaces.
The first conversation people usually have is about the building itself: insulation, flooring, heating. Electrical tends to come up later, sometimes much later, when the framing is in and the question “wait, where do we put the panel?” gets asked for the first time.
Here’s the thing: electrical is the one part of a garage or shop build that really does need to come first. What you put in the walls now determines whether your space works the way you want it to for the next 20 years, or whether you’re calling an electrician again in three years because you’ve outgrown what was installed.

Sub-Panel vs. Individual Circuits: Which One Does Your Garage Actually Need?
The answer depends on what you plan to do in the space, and how much flexibility you want for the future.
Individual circuits make sense for smaller garages with modest needs: a few outlets, a couple of lights, and maybe one 240V circuit for a basic tool. If your panel is in the house and the garage is attached or close by, running two or three dedicated circuits directly from the main panel is sometimes the most straightforward approach.
A sub-panel is the better choice when your garage or shop needs more capacity than a few circuits can deliver, or when you want room to grow. A sub-panel installed in the garage becomes its own distribution point. You can add circuits from it later without going back to the main panel, which means less disruption and lower cost for future changes.
For a typical detached garage, we install a 60-amp sub-panel. That’s enough capacity for lighting, regular outlets, a plug-in block heater or EV charger, and a couple of 240V circuits, while still leaving room on the panel for future additions.
For a dedicated shop or a more heavily used workspace, 100 amps is usually the right size. Welders, large compressors, and radiant heaters draw significant power, and a 100-amp panel gives you the capacity to run multiple tools without constantly watching your load.
What 240V Circuits Actually Require (and Why It Matters Before You Run Wire)
A lot of tools people want in a shop or garage run on 240V rather than the standard 120V you get from a regular household outlet. Welders, large air compressors, air conditioning units, and EV chargers all fall into this category. Each one requires a dedicated 240V circuit, sized appropriately for the load.
Here’s what that means in practice:
- Welders vary significantly. A small hobbyist welder might require a 50-amp, 240V circuit. A larger unit could need more. The circuit size needs to match the welder’s specifications, not just a general estimate.
- Air compressors with large motors often need a 30 or 40-amp, 240V circuit. Running one on an undersized circuit causes the motor to work harder and shortens its life.
- EV chargers typically require a 40 or 50-amp, 240V dedicated circuit. If a garage sub-panel has a 60-amp feed, installing an EV charger is very workable; it’s one of the reasons we size garage panels that way.
- Electric heaters (radiant or forced-air) need their own 240V circuit as well. Running a heater on the same circuit as other heavy tools isn’t safe or code-compliant.
The more of these items you want in your space, the more important it is to plan the panel size and circuit layout before any wire goes in. Adding a 240V circuit after the fact in a finished garage is possible, but it costs more and involves more disruption than planning for it from the start.
The Distance Problem: Why a Shop 200 Feet from Your House Is a Different Job
If your shop or outbuilding is close to the house, running power to it is relatively straightforward. But many acreage properties and rural lots have shops, barns, or outbuildings that sit well away from the main service entrance. That distance changes things.
Electricity loses voltage as it travels through wire. The longer the run, the more voltage drop you get, and voltage drop affects how well your equipment performs. A welder or compressor that runs fine indoors can underperform or fail to start properly if the voltage arriving at its plug is meaningfully lower than what it’s designed for.
The solution is straightforward but has to be planned upfront: heavier wire. A run that works fine at 50 feet needs a larger wire gauge at 200 feet to deliver the same voltage at the far end. That heavier wire costs more per foot, so a longer run changes the material cost of the job. It also needs to be properly buried if it’s running underground, at the right depth and in the right conduit.

Planning for How You Actually Use the Space
The best garage and shop electrical plans aren’t built around the minimum required; they’re built around how the space will actually be used. That means thinking through a few things before the first hole is drilled.
Lighting is often underpowered in garage plans. A single overhead fluorescent fixture might be fine for parking a car. If you’re doing any kind of detailed work, automotive, woodworking, or fabrication, proper task lighting makes a real difference. We typically plan for general overhead lighting plus dedicated lighting circuits over workbench areas.
Outlet placement should follow the work, not the walls. Outlets positioned at workbench height along the work area are more useful than outlets low on the wall at the far corner. A good electrical plan accounts for where you’ll actually be standing and what you’ll be plugging in.
Heating circuits need to be part of the plan if you want to use the space year-round. In Alberta, a garage without heat is a garage that’s empty from November to April. We install both electric radiant heaters and forced-air electric heaters in garages and shops. Each type has a dedicated 240V circuit, separate from everything else.
Future-proofing means leaving room. If you’re installing a sub-panel now, size it to leave breaker slots open. If you’re pretty sure you’ll want an EV charger someday but aren’t ready yet, have the conduit run and the breaker space reserved. It’s far less expensive to do that during the initial build than to retrofit it later.
Retrofitting is Possible
As an example, Kennedy Kirkhope came to us needing two 240V circuits added to his garage. He wanted them run with as little disruption to the existing walls as possible. His words: the crew was “able to run the lines within the existing walls with minimal interruption and construction,” fishing the armoured cable through the studs and insulation without tearing up the space he’d already built out.
Another client, P.T., had us wire his garage and bring the basement wiring up to code at the same time. When he picked up a welder shortly after and needed it wired in, he called us back. We came out the following day.
